Caulfield Racecourse is one of the most famous thoroughbred racetracks in Australia, situated in the city of Melbourne and home to some of Australia’sthe countries best racing events. Found just eight kilometres from the centre of Melbourne, this great venue is owned by the Crown and operated by the Melbourne Racing Club. The Caulfield Cup is the most well known event hosted at Caulfield Racecourse each year, although there are almost 50 other Group events also held around the year. Along with the famous Caulfield Cup, other big name events at this venue include the Caulfield Guineas, Blue Diamond Stakes, Oakleigh Plate, Underwood Stakes, and lots more.
The racetrack at Caulfield is in a roughly triangular shape, and is made up of 2080 metres with a final home straight of 367 metres. Caulfield can be difficult for many horses to come to grips with, with the 30-metre wide track and five percent turns a tough ask for all who compete there during one the 20 racedays each season. Along with the Caulfield Cup and other high profile Group 1 events, there are almost 30 lower Group 2 and Group 3 events also run at Caulfield each season. Hundreds of thousands of race lovers witness these races each year, some of who are lucky enough to witness totally uninterupted views of the track from the totally glassed in Rupert Clarke stand.
Of the many races hosted at Caulfield each year, there are 11 Group 1 events ranging from the 1100 metre Oakleigh Plate to the 2000 metre Caulfield Stakes. The Blue Diamond Stakes, CF Orr Stakes, Futurity Stakes, and Oakleigh Plate take place in February; the Underwood Stakes and Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes in September; and the Caulfield Cup, Caulfield Guineas, Caulfield Stakes, Thousand Guineas, and Toorak Handicap during October. While the Group 1 races may bring the headlines, every raceday at Caulfield also includes lots of supporting Group 2, Group 3, and Listed events.
